Jonathan + Olivia Have Arrived!

October of 2005, can be deemed the month that Canada’s boutique market just got a little cooler. Owner, Jackie O’Brien, had come from a strong retail background, as both a sales associate and fashion buyer of 10 years. She decided it was time for something a bit different and began the venture of placing her own mark on Vancouver’s retail landscape. Originally located in B.C’s Mount Pleasant on Main St., the unisex store baring the names of her niece and nephew, Jonathan and Olivia, was born. And, there it had quickly became a standard for the fashion forward shopper.

In August of 2008 the trail blazing retailer opened shop in Toronto and with it brought the same sensibility. Carrying such progressive designers as: Alexander Wang, Band of Outsiders, Surface 2 Air + Justice, Oliver Spencer, Helmut Lang and many others. It was finally proof that Vancouver and Toronto could play together nicely.

I was told about the store’s opening almost three months before its actual public unveiling, by a friend and fellow fashion addict. She had said to me, “Migs”, that’s what she calls me, “you are going to love this f****** store!” A woman of few words but, totally right.

I had the pleasure of visiting the very minimal designed but inviting new boutique this past month. And, must say I was very excited about the lines that where available for men. Being a man, of course . Not to say that the women’s section was at all lacking. My point, I fell in love with silhouettes they where introducing for the male figure. Very streamlined and modern takes on such staples as the trench coat or even something as basic as denim. It was a reminder that a man could look very runway yet, still masculine and practical.

The women’s side had embraced all the current and forward trends, and complimented the tone set in men’s section seemlessly. I was very happy to see that we had gotten another alternative to the over-done looks that we have grown accustom too within the city. I recommend the trek and I think you too will “f****** love it!

Toronto City’s Elite, Loves Corbo Boutique

When the name Yorkville is brought up as the topic of conversation, many stereo types come to mind. Elitists, Euro-delusional, aristocratic, snobbish and all things pretentious. Now, I’m not saying that these are necessarily completely off the mark, a bit harsh, but not thoroughly untrue. This Toronto area on to its self, has developed a bad rap over the years however; within in its jurisdiction, houses some of the most exciting and cutting edge boutiques in the city.

Which brings me to Corbo Boutique. Carrying such world renowned and highly recognizable designers as: Jimmy Choo, Yves Saint Laurent, Stella McCartney just as a start, certainly does not put you in my bad books, by any means. It is definitely for the woman who wants to be noticed and leave a lasting impression. Also, she must not mind dolling out the designer dollars. There just seems to be something a little different about this particular woman’s boutique, that separates it from all the others on this affluent strip. I’ll leave it to you, to judge for yourself.

Corbo Boutique | 119 Yorkville Ave. | (416)928-9898
Hours: Mon – Wed 10–6, Thurs 10–8, Fri – Sat 10–6, Sun 1–5

6. Jonathan and Olivia – 49 Ossington Ave. ( at Queen St. W.) 416-849-5956, jonathanandolivia.com. Originally located in Main St. in Vancouver BC. in 2005. Founder Jackie O’Brien in 2008 has entered the Toronto retail market bringing to the city an exciting new boutique for both men and women. This modest store houses some of the most innovative brands from all over the globe.

5. Lileo – 55 Mill St. ( in the Historic Distillery District) 416-413-1410, lileo.ca. Founded by the man responsible for Big Star’s success and one half of the visionary team that brought lululemon to eastern Canada, Syd Beder. Alongside partner Alexandra Bennett, brings you Lileo. A gorgeous destination hot spot stocked to the rafters with exciting and upcoming lines. A must for celebrity fashion stockers.

4. Jacflash – 1036 Queen St. W. ( between Ossington Ave and Dovercourt Rd.) 416-516-8766, jacflash.net . When co-founders, father and daughter team, Geoffrey and Jaclyn Genovese decided to open up an edgy unisex boutique in the heart of Toronto’s fastest growing districts on September of 2007. I don’t even think they would have imagined the response they would receive by the city’s “fashion forward” community. Jacflash carries a wide selection of essential “must haves” for a wide age bracket.

3. Corbo Boutique – 119 Yorkville Ave. ( at Hazelton Lane) 416-928-9898. A perfect example of feminine elegance minus your typical Yorkville Euro obsession. This boutique houses some of the most forefront labels the global market has to offer. Bare in mind you may drop a pretty penny in this 1500 sq. ft. space but, the attention you’ll receive upon exit, priceless.

2. Nomad – 431 Richmond St W. ( at Spadina Ave.) 416-682-1107, nomadshop.net. Sister store to both Ransom and Goodfoot (two definite honorable mentions), Nomad has certainly held its own weight and has proven itself to be a force in itself. This store offers some of the rarest denim and clothing brands for the progressive male. A bit off the beaten path but, certainly worth the deviation.

1. Sydney’s – 795 Queen St. W. ( at Manning Ave.) 416-603-3369 sydneystoronto.com. What can I say, this is currently my favorite Men’s store in the city. Owner Syndey Maname has brought a heightened level to tailoring and over all class to Toronto Men’s fashion. Originally this petite boutique carried both men’s and women’s lines but, as it faded out the female presence in the store, it seemed to have really homed in on its vision of the male silhouette. If you like to look good, for either business or pleasure, I recommend you run on over and see what they have to offer.
