The Prada Swagger
by Logan Steele · Leave a Comment
A little known fact about “the Devil’s” favourite designer is that for its first 65 years of production it was a struggling business. Founder Mario Prada had started out as a suitcase, handbag and trunk artisan in Milan in 1913. And, although the house received some recognition in both Europe and the United States, it had not truly come into his own.
As we fast forward to the 1970’s Mario had past on his legacy to his grand daughter Muicchia Prada. It would be her that would introduce haute couture to the primarily luxury leather goods manufacturer. By the 1980’s Prada had become truly a force to be recognized and reckoned with. Over the years the company’s innovative fabrics, simple but elegant designs, continuous reinvention and world class craftsmanship has solidified itself as one of the world’s premier fashion institutions. This once striving brand is more successful now than ever before.

Bloor / Yonge offers its shoppers two fabulous shopping strips and countless retail options. Bloor St. alone has all the major chains and designer brands anyone can desire. From Prada to the The Gap its all available on Bloor, I guess that you could refer to it as Toronto’s own “Magnificent Mile” well, kilometer. And, what more can I say about this portion of Yonge St. that has not already been said? There are literally dozens of boutiques for all tastes and needs. Overall this is a “must shop” district. Enjoy!

Conveniently attached to the PATH underground network and Bay subway station, this centre not only holds a great variety of products but also the alternative of underground passage, on those grey and soggy days. Chanel – A taste of Paris on Bloor St.
by Logan Steele · Leave a Comment
Recognized for being the world’s greatest fashion empire, Chanel has served as a template for classic feminine luxury and design decadence. Founded by the late great Parisian av ante-garde, Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel in 1909. The house has inspired and spawned some the globes most innovative and important designers (including Mr. Karl Lagerfeld, of course). Creating some of the most sensational examples of garment and accessory craftsmanship, Chanel maintains its pertinence in the ever changing, “cut-throat” fashion world. With their simple yet effective black and white trademark pallet, this line has achieved what many brands have struggled to obtain. A continuous production of highly desired merchandise, without any drastic deviation form the labels original vision, season after season after season. And, it is for this reason it will forever be the most fabulous of them all.

The Annex – Bloor St.’s historical district
by Logan Steele · Leave a Comment
Who would have thought in 1835, when the Annex was simply two vacant farm lots, that it would blossom into the community it has in this present day. The area is bordered by Bathurst Ave., St. George St. and Bloor St. contains within it a unique and down played almost bohemian demeanor. It is one of the only areas in the city that is not over run by large chain retailers and actually maintains a strong independent business market. The shopping on this strip I do find a bit sparse however; there are a few boutiques that carry some interesting merchandise. At very least it is worth the trip to see one of Toronto’s oldest suburban areas and its historic mansion littered streets.

Holt Renfrew – The definition of high end shopping
by Logan Steele · Leave a Comment
First and foremost let me start off by saying, that even I can’t believe that I have not written a specific post about Holt Renfrew, until right now. My apologies for my oversight. I guess in my efforts to enlighten the public about all our other amazing retail destinations, I had forgotten the most obvious of them all. Holts is what high end shopping is all about, that is assuming you have the budget to back that (at times) crippling bill you will inevitably receive upon your purchase. There is no end to the designer label cavalcade you’ll find in this institution of Canadian consumerism. You name it Holts has it; LV, Prada, D&G, Marc Jacobs just for starters and without breaking a single sweat. This is THE cutting edge retailer for our great city. Enough said.

Harry Rosen

When you think Harry Rosen you think impeccable men’s fashion. This Toronto menswear institution has been around for 55 years and is still a front-runner in defining what it means to be a male driven fashion retailer.
Its ever growing inventory remains current and inventive, consisting of such highly sought-after designers as Hugo Boss, Belstaff, Burberry, Parajumpers P.J.S.–to name just a few. And it still serves the man who wants custom tailored pieces.
Its staff is known for being both knowledgeable and attentive. There is no question why this store continues to flourish in the competitive market of men’s style, blending an old-fashioned classic sensibility mixed with modern flare. I wish Mr. Rosen another 55 years of prosperity!

Bloor Street Shopping in Toronto – One Stop Shopping
by Logan Steele · Leave a Comment
When I think of the Bloor and Yorkville shopping experience, for some reason I often can’t help comparing it to a dismantled high-end shopping mall. Allow me to explain further; with in this 2 x 2 kilometer block, you can literally find every high-end and common label brand this city has to offer.
I dare you to think of a well-known label, be it LV or even Lululemon, which is not readily available within the confines of Bloor St. or Yorkville. It is your one-stop shop for recognizable branding, much like … well you see what I’m getting at. And, have I mentioned the words “label” or brand”. However, this is not to say that the edge has completely been diverted from this retail landmark.
The picturesque Yorkville, houses many cool upscale but edgy storefronts. It is not just about the Euro-labels and luxury items. Retailers such as the veteran Uncle Otis, Over the Rainbow and TNT have managed to create and carve its own nook, in the part of town some have nicknames Little Rodeo. Once here however, no one can deny that Yorkville is definitely its own little world within our city. And, with arrival of such terrific designer boutiques as; Betsy Johnson and Vivian Shyu, this street will continue to be just that. But, that does not mean that it is not accessible to us regular city folk. Although it is geared more towards the higher end of the retail spectrum. Take it from a regular run-of-the-mill shopaholic (that had worked in this part of town for many years) there is still plenty to discover.
Now, Bloor on the other hand, is whatever you want it to be. It caters to everyone from the work driven, to those still working it all out. You have everything from Roots, Puma, The Gap and Winners. Right up to Prada, Escada, Cartier and Holt Renfrew. It can be a destination for your work and leisure attire, as well as your more opulent and jet set events. I can not say anything bad about the shopping on Bloor. Well, maybe just that it always seems to be under some form of construction but, welcome to Toronto. This is the part of town for those of us, who just want to see the brands we have come to know and trust.
