For Love, Liberty and Lileo

October 31, 2008 by Logan Steele

Founded by Syd Beder, the man attributed the highly successful Big Star brand. Alongside partner Alexandra Bennett, both key components in the introduction of Lululemon to Canada’s eastern market. These two decided to open the lifestyle based, concept destination boutique in the historic Distillery District on February of 2004. Named after Renaissance philosopher Galileo Galilee.

Lileo houses some the most unique and hard to come by labels for man, woman and child. Designers such as Nice Collective, Jean Shop, A.P.C, Alife and a slew of others, have found refuge in this gorgeous warehouse sized loft space. Also available, some amazing coffee table books on everything from fashion to world issues past and present, all within its four thousand square foot confine. Lileo is truly a store that stands alone.

My wife and I, in the effort of exploring our neighbourhood, discovered this hidden treasure after crossing the street and venturing into the Distillery a few years back. And, have been happy patrons to the store ever since. My very first impression was that of complete wow. We had just came back from the France, Spain, Germany and the U.K.. It was our engagement trip. And, this place reminded me of so many of the boutiques we had stumbled into, in and throughout Europe. I was beside myself to have found something in Toronto that I could compare, to what was happening on the world front as far as fashion was concerned. I especially love how with every garment, attached was a brief bio of the designer and concept behind the item.

A number of the lines available in the store were unfamiliar to myself and it was great having this synopsis handy. Needless to say, my wife a I decided to split up to explore the store grounds more thoroughly. Her in woman’s, me in men’s and upon regrouping had found ourselves with a lot of new favorite items in hand. We started to wonder who else would benefit from the knowledge of the store’s existence and proceeded to tell everyone we deemed worthy and ready for such privileged information. But, as with all great things, it was not be secret for very long and I think the city is now better for it. All destination shoppers, I urge you to point your compass towards Lileo.
