A Good Kind of Flash Back

November 13, 2008 by Logan Steele

In these stressful economic times, in which recreational spending has become sparse and indulgence frowned upon. Aren’t you glad we can always just go and buy vintage? I mean how bad can you feel knowing that you just bought a used designer leather coat for thirty bucks and a quirky novelty throw-back rock-tee for ten? If you have an eye for it you can find whatever you want. What is it that is said, “one man’s trash…”. In my honest opinion, out of all the numerous vintage shops in our world famous Kensington Market, Flash Back would have to appear at the top of my list. Now all you other merchants don’t get all bent out of shape. This neighbourhood nook indisputably hosts some of the best vintage finds in the city, period.

Vintage Depot also comes to mind as a great spot with an amazing selection for those who enjoy the hunt. Planet Aid also comes highly recommended (I once bought an unbelievable Christian Dior, wide width, brown paisley woven neck tie there, that’s “the dog’s bollocks!”) and the cool thing is that a portion of their proceeds goes towards various charitable organizations. How could you possibly feel guilty for shopping there? And, the list goes on and on. I encourage one and all to see what this market place of food, culture and vintage bounty has to offer. But what I’m saying is, while you are there, definitely check out Flash Back.

Located less than a quarter block north off Dundas Street on Kensington Ave. Flash Back stands alone amongst some of the best finds is the Toronto area. Its variety and constant new arrivals of great conditioned unique garments make this shop a must stop. The owner, if you are lucky enough to have him there while you are perusing, is a plethora of information and is always willing to take you through his stock to help you find the preloved treasure you a looking for. I must say his passion for fashion gets contagious. Their denim and leather selection can’t be matched. They have some of the largest selection of military and military inspired apparel around. Not counting The Army Surplus, of coarse.

Personally, I used to go there to hunt for rock-tees, belts and belt buckles. If you make your way to the back of the store which could be intimidating just by the sheer volume of merchandise back there. You are greeted by racks and mounds of clothing, bags, shoes, hats etc. You honestly need an hour just to go through the hidden gems in the back room alone. Their large array of jackets has something for every taste – varsity, leather, canvas, motorcycle… they house them all in this fifteen hundred square foot space. And, most importantly the prices at this retro retailer are always beyond reasonable. This is the one flash back that won’t leave you feeling sketched out.
