Welcome, 2009!
January 26, 2009 by Logan Steele · Leave a Comment
Ladies and gentlemen, we survived yet another year in our great city of Toronto. And as we bid farewell to the “do’s and don’ts” of ’08, it’s time to start focusing on the infinite fashionable possibilities awaiting us at the dawn of ’09.
Ladies, set those slouchy sweaters and “Tom Boy Couture” pieces aside; it’s time to re-embrace your femininity. Gentlemen, the “80’s Campus” look has finally come to an end, so let’s graduate to a more polished appearance. 2009 is going to be a year of reinvention and re-evaluation. And we at TorontoShoppingList.com promise to be with you every step of the way!
The runway trends of 2009, although slightly varied from the previous year, still allow ample room for self expression and interpretation. I see a turn toward impeccable tailoring. As the look of ’08 was of a looser, more casual silhouette, this year’s focus may be more on structure and form.
In a trend inspired by late 60’s early 70’s avant-garde glamour (think Mod meets Monaco), we are noticing bolder prints, slimmer cuts as well as more gender specific pieces–women dressing like women, men looking like men. Androgyny has been taking a back seat, for the most part.
Believe it or not, street fashion, while still propelled by the skinny, narrow fitting denim, is starting to show signs of a more relaxed cut as an alternative. Although it may be a while before we fully divorce ourselves from our slimming companion, a change is on the horizon.
An upcoming look (primarily for men) is the reintroduction of the 50’s “Grease Monkey” aesthetic. Leather jackets, vests, straight-leg-raw-denim dungaree and plain white v-necks, are all back. It would seem that the rebel has found a new cause. However, please use in moderation!
For the ladies, think simplicity and texture. The vintage overload of the past has finally blown a fuse and it’s time to return to staple basics. Ruffled neck lines, minimally printed tees, motorcycle jackets and slightly flared jeans are all good choices for the Spring/Summer season.
Consider yourself now “in the know,” Toronto. Happy 2009!
There is so much more coming your way– stay tuned!
A New Must “Shop” Boutique on Queen West
January 20, 2009 by Logan Steele · Leave a Comment
Are You A Hunter or Gatherer?
When my dear friend (and sometime domino adversary) Daniela Bosco told me that she was finally committed to opening her own store, I felt an air of distinction waft over our city’s retail landscape.
Daniela is a 10-year industry veteran and self-proclaimed “style junkie.” She has maneuvered throughout the vast spectrum of our city’s fashion environment as a wardrobe stylist, line agent, retail manager and all round fierce individual. It was no mystery why she felt compelled to explore the adventurous next step of becoming an entrepreneur and visionary.
Ladies and gentlemen, allow let me introduce to one and all, Toronto’s own “Private Hunting Ground”– Chasse Gardée.

Finally a boutique for those who have a very clear idea of their own personal sense of style. Chasse Gardée is found in the Queen St. West & Dovercourt area, one of Toronto’s up-and-coming trendy neighbourhoods.
This boutique’s aesthetic could be described as a textural backdrop with a rustic sensibility. The inviting and unpretentious setting blends both modern and minimal sensibilities with classic poise. Daniela explained to me that it was important for her that the store’s interior complimented the spirit of its Queen St. West location.
I would have to agree that its atmosphere certainly reflects the creative verve of the area, while perfectly showcasing Daniela’s superb eye for merchandise. You will be amazed at the selection of shoes, handbags and accessories.
Chasse Gardée hosts such hard-to-come-by labels as Slow and Steady Wins the Race, Finsk and Grey Ant, to just name a few. As well, be on the lookout for the arrival of Swedish Hasbeens, Belstaff, Tiger of Sweden, Tashkent by Cheyanne among others.
This is definitely the boutique for those who seek out unique designer brands typically exclusive to a Yorkville-esque locale but now conveniently available on trendy Queen St. West. Currently Chasse Gardée only carries lines for women, but Daneila has assured me that her “spring/summer” collection will also have lines for Toronto’s cutting-edge men. It can’t be ALL about the ladies, right?
A “must shop” spot when it comes to Toronto shopping!

Decibel

Considered one of Toronto’s best-kept little secrets, this boutique offers some of the most fashion-forward men’s lines in the city. Its modest store front is almost completely unnoticeable–those not in the “know” could very easily miss it.
Don’t let its size fool you. This Queen West nook houses some great local and international designers. You will love the innovative men’s accessories. This is a definite stop for the man who wants that “mature aesthetic with an urban edge.”

Does “Got Style” Truly Have Style…?
January 17, 2009 by Logan Steele · Leave a Comment
Gentlemen this store serves as example that when it comes to shopping, women do not have all the fun. As implied in the name, this is the boutique for the man that has truly got a strong sense of their own personal fashion. What can I say? With lines such as Tiger of Sweden, House of Howe, Bustle (just to name a few). Plus, custom tailored suits and shirts. And, a pampering lounge for that man who needs a bit of extra attention. I would say? It is pretty hard to go unnoticed once you’ve done yourself a favor and pay Got Style a visit. Can’t we all use a little more style in our lives?

The StyleXchange

Originating in our sometime-rival Canadian city of Montreal, The StyleXchange is a welcomed addition to Toronto’s retail playing field. This urban retailer carries a bevy of recognizable high end street wear brands. And they house the best denim on the Yonge Street strip. Lines such as Diesel, Energie, Miss. Sixty, G-Star (just for starters) dominate its sales floor. This popular chain has certainly provided proof that Montreal and Toronto can get along.

Nike Air Force One “The Ultimate Collection” Pt. 1
Nike Air Force Ones have been the center of attention when it comes to sneakers for the past few decades. There is something awe inspiring about them and the celebrities who don them on a regular basis. The name itself is derived from the presidential airplane which shares the same name, minus the Nike of course. There are countless numbers of celebrities that swear by these shoes and an even greater number of collectors. There are some key characteristics that define the brand on the whole but on the other hand there are an infinite amount of designs, colors and schemes that the shoe comes in.
The Air Force Ones have three distinct styles including high-top, low-top and mid-top. The defining characters of these shoes include a Velcro strap that can hang low or be tied up tight, a removable medallion attached to the laces with the numbers 82 inscribed to signify the first year in which they were produced. On top of these features, the vast array of colors, designs, sizes and shapes that the shoes come in has made them world famous and a hot commodity for all sneaker collectors. No collection of sneakers can be deemed complete with a couple of air force ones that have been deemed rare and special.
While there are an infinite number of color combinations, the most popular by far is the “white-on-white” version that is solid white throughout. Celebrities from Jay-Z to pretty much every popular basketball player swear by these sneakers for everyday wear and special occasions. While the sneakers did gain original popular through rap moguls and idols, they have become much more mainstream throughout the world in recent years and can be seen pretty much anywhere you go. Possibly the biggest exposure the brand got was when rap superstar Nelly produced a single entitled, “Air Force Ones” to commemorate the widespread popularity.
One of the reasons that the Nike Air Force Ones have such popularity among collectors is the simple fact that the sale of them is strictly regulated. If you want to get your hands on the original sneakers, you cannot purchase them through online retailers or in knock off stores. Of course, as with any other product you can get street made versions but they will not be the real deal. Nike itself has strictly regulated the manufacturing of the shoes and they have even produced a large number of collector items that were only released for a very short time. These are the shoes that major sneaker collectors will have in their home strictly to look at and not for personal wear. Nike has also produced Air Force Ones specifically designed for superstars like Lebron James and Micheal Jordan.
Be sure to choose the right type of shoes for your sport though. If you are playing basketball, you may wish to pick up a pair of Nike Air Force One or Nike Dunks. If you are into running, a pair of Nike athletics shoes may be just what you are looking for. Having the right pair of shoes is important because as mentioned earlier, different sports involve different movements. The shoes are specially built to cater to these movements. You don’t want to be wearing a pair of indoor court shoes to run a marathon. That will do more harm than good.

Roots

What could possibly be more Canadian than the iconic beaver?
I would assume this is why it serves as the emblem of our much-loved, world renowned retailer Roots. Besides carrying amazing and original apparel for man, woman and child, Roots is known for its keen eye for current trends and staple classics; its high quality outerwear and shoe selection; and its world-class leather goods and custom pieces.
What I love most about Roots is that it is still very much ours and has yet to deviate from what made it so great in the beginning: quality goods with a definite Canadian twist.
Keep up the good work fellas!

When you think Harry Rosen you think impeccable men’s fashion. This Toronto menswear institution has been around for 55 years and is still a front-runner in defining what it means to be a male driven fashion retailer.
Its ever growing inventory remains current and inventive, consisting of such highly sought-after designers as Hugo Boss, Belstaff, Burberry, Parajumpers P.J.S.–to name just a few. And it still serves the man who wants custom tailored pieces.
Its staff is known for being both knowledgeable and attentive. There is no question why this store continues to flourish in the competitive market of men’s style, blending an old-fashioned classic sensibility mixed with modern flare. I wish Mr. Rosen another 55 years of prosperity!

Nestled in Toronto’s ultra-chic Yorkville district (its most recognized location), this boutique has brought a much needed urban edge to the highfalutin’ area. Sister store of the highly successful TNT Woman and TNT Man family, this attitude-driven addition houses some of the most interesting lines the world has to offer.
It is almost overwhelming the amount of merchandise available at this retailer. Lines like Comme Des Garcons, Helmut Lang and Nudie don’t even begin to scratch the surface of what one may find. Toronto has finally found that explosive element we’ve been looking for!
