For Love, Liberty and Lileo

October 31, 2008 by Logan Steele · Leave a Comment

Founded by Syd Beder, the man attributed the highly successful Big Star brand. Alongside partner Alexandra Bennett, both key components in the introduction of Lululemon to Canada’s eastern market. These two decided to open the lifestyle based, concept destination boutique in the historic Distillery District on February of 2004. Named after Renaissance philosopher Galileo Galilee.

Lileo houses some the most unique and hard to come by labels for man, woman and child. Designers such as Nice Collective, Jean Shop, A.P.C, Alife and a slew of others, have found refuge in this gorgeous warehouse sized loft space. Also available, some amazing coffee table books on everything from fashion to world issues past and present, all within its four thousand square foot confine. Lileo is truly a store that stands alone.

My wife and I, in the effort of exploring our neighbourhood, discovered this hidden treasure after crossing the street and venturing into the Distillery a few years back. And, have been happy patrons to the store ever since. My very first impression was that of complete wow. We had just came back from the France, Spain, Germany and the U.K.. It was our engagement trip. And, this place reminded me of so many of the boutiques we had stumbled into, in and throughout Europe. I was beside myself to have found something in Toronto that I could compare, to what was happening on the world front as far as fashion was concerned. I especially love how with every garment, attached was a brief bio of the designer and concept behind the item.

A number of the lines available in the store were unfamiliar to myself and it was great having this synopsis handy. Needless to say, my wife a I decided to split up to explore the store grounds more thoroughly. Her in woman’s, me in men’s and upon regrouping had found ourselves with a lot of new favorite items in hand. We started to wonder who else would benefit from the knowledge of the store’s existence and proceeded to tell everyone we deemed worthy and ready for such privileged information. But, as with all great things, it was not be secret for very long and I think the city is now better for it. All destination shoppers, I urge you to point your compass towards Lileo.

Hours: S/S Mon – Wed 10–7, Thurs – Sat 10–9, Sun 10–6

Toronto Eaton Centre – Pro’s and Con’s

October 31, 2008 by Logan Steele · Leave a Comment

My fellow Torontonians, I pose a question to you:

When did we begin to fall out of love with our beloved Eaton Centre?

Time after time when I bring up or mention having to go into this historic landmark to others, I am often confronted by the response of apprehension, condolence and over all dismissal. Now I realize this opinion is not shared by all, it does seem to be an attitude generally shared by those of us who dwell in and around the city’s core. While the citizen’s of our surrounding areas bare no qualms with frequenting this two block megaplex. The city’s inhabitants seem sooner to embrace dis-association.

For example invite your local trendy Queen St. sinister to the mall’s confines and you can all but guarantee a response of bafflement to why you feel this to be the course of retail therapy. Our Annex and College St. residents would seem sooner fit to go without the convenience of this one-stop centre than to grace its doorstep. And, don’t even think of bringing up the subject to our Bloor and Yorkville elite or face the consequence of banishment and ridicule just by the mere suggestion.

So, I am still left with the question of: Why?

As a first generation Canadian, as I am sure there are a lot of us out there. When did we grow so cold to the notion of the mall and all its hundred plus store inhabitants? Certainly our parents didn’t share this jaded point of view and welcomed the fact that they could buy both a three pack of gym socks and a cassette player all within the same structure. As a child the very mention of visiting Toronto’s capital of consumerism, would bring never-ending joy and excitement. And, would force you to get ready at almost lightning speed in the fear that your outing my get curtailed. So why now have we developed this love – hate relationship? We seem to love the the idea of having it around but, yet hate to go inside.

Have we grown so distant from the very centre we used to frequent as children, adolescents and young adults? What exactly has this mall done to us that has changed our views of it, so dramatically? So, in the effort of preserving this soured connection I propose this; a list of both Pro’s and Con’s for shopping at our world famous Eaton Centre. So that we can once and for all, lay our cards on the table. And, hopefully, finally rekindle or dissolve this life long kinship we have, with the once, largest shopping centre of Canada.

Now, let me start by saying I don’t really hate going to the Eaton Centre. I, like many others, am simply just not a “mall person”. I think that the feeling of reluctance I have towards the T.E.C could be extended to any malls, plaza or strip mall, believe me its nothing personal. However; I don’t think I will ever come upon the proper wording for how I feel, until I investigate further on why this particular mall brings such mixed emotions. For those of you who sympathize with my dilemma, this one is for you.

On with the list:

Pro – It is a one stop destination centre.
Con – It is often overly crowded and provides the ambiance of a herding ranch.

Pro – It is easily accessible by public transit.
Con – It is often frequented by society’s riff-raff and delinquents.

Pro – Being deemed as a tourist attraction, it is opened on holidays.
Con – Being deemed as a tourist attraction, it is opened on holidays. (this is for all the mall’s employees that have to show up to work on New Year’s day after the night of debauchery before, I feel for you.)

Pro – It is located in the heart of the city
Con – It is a point of contention to those who drive

Pro – It hosts a large selection of recognizable retailers.
Con – I really can’t find any problem with this point, let’s skip it.

I think that this is a good start. However; why should I be the only voice on this matter? At this point I would like to invite you, our readers, to contribute your own Pro’s and Con’s to our list. It is, after all, your mall as well. I think in conclusion a large part of our problem with the Eaton Centre is that we view it as a place of burden. And, we dread the moments that we have to go within it to achieve whatever shopping task that faces us. If we can merely start viewing it again as a place of practicality and easy solutions, I feel we may be on the right path of reconciliation. I urge you to not let the love die and remember the good times. Every relationship requires a period of adjustment, just how much are you willing to bend? It may be time to start fresh again.

Definitely Delphic – Street Wear Heaven!

October 31, 2008 by Logan Steele · Leave a Comment

What can I say about this store that hasn’t already left the lips of all its loyal patrons? It is an absolute MUST, for street wear fashion. Delphic was founded by owners Lena Kim and Matthew Robinson ( also of Klaxon Howl), this modest size boutique has been a well kept secret, for those in the know, for over ten years now. Delphic has always been the go-to for all things up and coming in trend, mainly due to the incredible buying eye of its owners.

If I recall correctly, it was one of only three stores in Toronto to embrace the now highly popular Japanese denim line Evisu, back in the late 90’s. And, continues to be a visionary with current exciting and buzz driven designers as: Fillipa K, Acne Action Jeans, Rockers NYC, Rogan to mention many others. I just can’t say enough great things about this spot.

I was a bartender for many years, so I had a lot of free time on my hands. I used to frequent this store, at a time, nearly bi-weekly. I always found the staff so engaging and informative about the lines that they had available. It was almost like taking a class in style, every visit. I remember years ago going there, out of the blue, while out on one of my summery Queen St. walks.

They had just gotten in a shipment of vintage but, mint conditioned, sunglasses. I had fell in immediate love with a pair of grey, plastic framed, cascade tinted, Cazal’s, that I think I ended wearing them right out the store. Long story short. Weeks later, some spin less jerk lifted them from my bag while I was at work. I suspect whom ever had done so, was scoping them out when I had arrived for my shift and timed the moment to make their move. To say the least I was very upset. I calmly called the store in the desperate hope that they may have had another pair. But, seeing how well they are known for their unique and rare merchandise, I was out of luck.

However; Lena and Sandra were nice enough to inform me that they were expecting another shipment of glasses for the following week. And, that there was a pair of Porshe Carrera aviators that they thought I may be interested in and would be willing to put aside for me. I did end up buying those glasses. And, remember thinking how cool they both were about trying to find me a replacement, after telling them about what had happened to my last pair.

That is the type of place this is, very chill and accommodating for those who are willing to reciprocate a similar manner. And, for the jask-ass with my sunglasses I hope your enjoying them because my new ones are even crazier, Bee-atch!

Get yourself over to Delphic.

Toronto City’s Elite, Loves Corbo Boutique

October 31, 2008 by Logan Steele · Leave a Comment

When the name Yorkville is brought up as the topic of conversation, many stereo types come to mind. Elitists, Euro-delusional, aristocratic, snobbish and all things pretentious. Now, I’m not saying that these are necessarily completely off the mark, a bit harsh, but not thoroughly untrue. This Toronto area on to its self, has developed a bad rap over the years however; within in its jurisdiction, houses some of the most exciting and cutting edge boutiques in the city.

Which brings me to Corbo Boutique. Carrying such world renowned and highly recognizable designers as: Jimmy Choo, Yves Saint Laurent, Stella McCartney just as a start, certainly does not put you in my bad books, by any means. It is definitely for the woman who wants to be noticed and leave a lasting impression. Also, she must not mind dolling out the designer dollars. There just seems to be something a little different about this particular woman’s boutique, that separates it from all the others on this affluent strip. I’ll leave it to you, to judge for yourself.

Boomer’s, Not Just for Boomers

October 30, 2008 by Logan Steele · Leave a Comment

Who would have thought in 1985, when Boomer first opened its doors, that it would still be such a driving force in men’s fashion. Originally catering to the “baby boomer” generation, hence the name, this petite boutique has managed to continuously update its labels and reinvent itself. Making it one of Toronto’s oldest retailers on the Queen West strip.

Without any major promotion and a mainly “word of mouth” clientèle this business flourishes, bringing within its confines all types. From your Bay St. business men to the Queen St. industry elite, fashionable men in the know, seem to all be on the the same page on where to go, when they need just a little something more. Carrying such amazing men’s designers as: J. Lindeberg, Hugo Boss, Tiger of Sweden, Cinque and others, this store has not lost touch with what had gained it recognition in the beginning. I hope Boomer is around for another twenty three years.

I have to admit that I got on the Boomer band wagon much later in life, and had only started frequenting the store in the past four years. Please bare in mind that I am only thirty-two and probably could not have afforded much in the store at any earlier age. I was amazed to find out how long it had been in existence and, was baffled on why I hadn’t heard of it earlier.

I must say that although they do carry denim lines and edgier casual pieces, this is definitely a spot for your more professional and formal occasions. Their suit selection is second to none and all have immaculate cuts and fits for all styles. The shirts have a tailored sensibility about them and the tie rack seems endless. It makes you want to find an excuse to dawn a sport coat at every possible chance. This is how you want to dress, once you feel you’ve graduated from the jean and sneaker look. I’m almost there, almost.

Get in and see for yourself, what your dad already knew!

Style for Less

October 24, 2008 by Logan Steele · Leave a Comment

Let’s face it, keeping up with the ever changing fashion climate can prove to be an expensive and an on-going affair. It seems every time we turn around, there is some new “must have” trend or item being catapulted at us. Believe me, I get it: fashion just like any other business is reliant on its ability to market and sell. It is just the nature of the beast. Now that leaves us consumers with the task of finding these looks and trends for less. Allow me to be your guide. It is no great secret that no matter what it is you are looking for, there will always be a place that has it for less. It’s called competitive pricing and I’m here to show how to work this in your favor.

We have all been in the predicament of seeing a new arrival and swearing on our unborn, that this garment will complete and enrich our existing wardrobe. And, although we may want to purchase “said item” immediately, we must hold off the temptation and do some investigation and soul searching. First of all, do you really need this item? Be it shoes, a jacket or hand bag? Too often, and I have done this many times myself, we buy things that we wear once and later use to test the strength and endurance of the hangers in our closet. This goes as well, for those fairly inexpensive items.

Just because it was a steal does not mean you will wear those Canary yellow overalls that only cost you twenty dollars. Sometimes we must accept that things have been marked down for a reason. However; after having fallen in love with your coveted item and the answer is a resounding “yes, I do need it”. Now, we begin to shop around. Generally when a new item is received by a retailer a few factors come into play when determining the price of that item. Number one, being the whole sale price and shipping costs. Remember stores are looking to turn a profit and need to recoup the money they have spent. That is only fair. A 2.2 – 2.5 profit margin conversion from the retail price plus a calculated cost of shipping per item, is usually standard. For example, a $100 item is marked up to $220 to $250. Many higher end stores such as Holts may mark it up even more. Number two, garments usually come with a suggested retail price from its manufacturer. This price ensures that each store will charge roughly the same price for the same garment. Is your head starting to hurt yet? Not to worry I am coming to point in all this. My point is; that there is room to play with. Find out the exact name and product code of your item, then call around and see where else may carry it. Usually no one retailer has the exclusive rights to particular item. Most “Mom and Pop” shops price their garments a bit lower than big franchises because they can’t afford to sit on product as long without making back their money. If you can, see if you can contact the Clothing Agency that represents that brand and see if you can go to their showroom and buy it directly from them. It’s always worth a try. You’ll be able to locate agencies both in and outside the city. These agencies are also in the business of getting rid of their stock and often you may receive a better price than at a retailer. Stop sacrificing food and rent because GSUS came out with a new bomber, you can have them both.

Now for those of you less itchy trigger fingers, who can actually wait awhile to purchase. This is when the real bargains start to surface. I know there is nothing quite like getting a item just as it comes out. All the stares you’ll undoubtedly receive, the never ending compliments and questions of where you were able to secure such a piece of wearable artistry? This does play into our decision process and, face it, our egos. But, there is no greater feeling than holding out a little while longer and getting it for less. My advice to you would be to sign yourself up to your favorite boutique(s) mailing list(s). This puts you in the loop of any and all upcoming sales offered to their preferred customers. Keep your ears out for “Sample Sales” often put on by the clothing agents, in random locations, as a way of getting rid of their unsold stock and often priced at 30% off retail price and higher, 75% off higher. Take notice of the Sale patterns of retailers: most Sale Seasons fall around early December, April and August. These are the times the new seasons are arriving so the stores have to get rid of as much older merchandise as possible. The only real gamble with these suggestions is that your size may be gone by the time the sale rolls around. But, if you are willing to roll the dice, you can save a lot of chips.

I’m not saying not to be a compulsive shopper, if you knew me you would understand how hypocritical that would be. What I’m saying is to stop and look at what it is you’re pining after and ask yourself “Is the price right?” and “Do I need it this minute?” We at Toronto Shopping List are here to guide you in the right direction so, relax and let us do our job. All you have to do is look good. :)

Men Dressing Like Men

October 22, 2008 by Logan Steele · Leave a Comment

For those who know me, I think it would be fairly safe to say that I consider myself to be a fashion forward thinker. Meaning, that I am not afraid of re-inventing my wardrobe to accommodate current trends but, done without sacrificing my personal sense of style.

Although at times I may have missed the mark, as do we all, I can still defend my occasional faux pas. I recently however; have come to a revalation, women are attracted to men who dress like men.

Let me explain.

Metrosexuality, although generally a good thing, has given birth to some excessive and fanatical subscribers. Men who have fallen victim to overly practiced grooming habits, obsessive self checks and far reaching fashion choices. Just because your favorite male celebrity chooses to drape themselves in Ed Hardy from head to toe. Does not give the rest of us, the green light to follow suit. In short, this little blurb is for you my fellow man.

First and foremost men, “be yourself“!

Not all trends are meant for all people, this goes for you too ladies. The trick with being stylish and fashionable is knowing where to draw the line and what works for you. I’ll give you an example – The skinny jean. Sure it does give one a sleeker and more constructed sillouhette. And, appears in every collection, from every reputable designer. But, even these designers know that there are only a small certain percentage of buyers that will do this look justice. Guys, if you can barely walk in those Cheap Monday Extra Slim Selvage Denim, take them off and try a straight leg. You can’t expect to circulate attention if you can barely circulate the blood flow in your lower body. This is just one of many examples.

The same could apply to: Gucci fanny pouches, printed fedoras, all True Religion jeans, over-sized Dior sunglasses, embroibered trucker hats… These are not intended for every man. And, to be honest I’m not completely convinced that the men they are intended for, should be wearing them either. I guess a good basic rule to follow would be; If your twenties involved Drum n’ Bass, Napster or Y2K, leave it alone and let it be. Women like a man that looks both confident, as well as comfortable in their own skin and neither can be achieved by dressing out of your depth.

Secondly, wearing clothes that fit. Once you have determined what clothing best suits your style, buy the appropriate size. I’m all for being comfortable and having a bit of room to breath but, that does not mean going up three sizes. This can also apply to those men who buy colthes three sizes too small as well, I see you out there. The average guy hates to shop for clothing. I totally get it. The selection can be overwhelming, paying attention to current styles and tailoring, what colours and fabrics work for you etc. I get it believe me. So wouldn’t you prefer to do it right the first time, so you wouldn’t have to go back and correct your past mistakes? Try things on, get in the the change room and “get ‘er done”, as they say. This way you know what works immediately. You can get the proper size, style and fit all in one shot.

Just a note guys: try not to buy clothing that is too flamboyant and forward. Women are not drawn to a man whose wardrobe’s mirrors their own. Clothing that is too loose make many men look juvenile and clothing that is to tight make them look self-absorbed. Today’s words are; Happy Medium. I think even the gay men out there would agree, its all in the way you work it and they are infamous for always having the hottest female friends, so take note.

Thirdly, invest in some nice shoes. Woman almost inherently upon seeing a man they find even remotely attractive, will eventually look at their feet. Most high-end bars and lounges in the city have trained their door staff to allow and restrict entry based on the occupants shoes and watch. What does this tell us? A man’s shoes tell more about the person than we care to believe. Now, I myself am a sneaker and overall shoe fanatic, it almost disgusts me to think about the amount of money I have sank into footwear. But, just like every building needs a strong foundation. A great outfit can be kiboshed by a bad shoe choice. Sneakers are great and comfortable but, should not be paired with every single out fit. Those Steve Madden mock-croc skin boots looked great on Saturday night but it’s now your Monday morning meeting and you look ridiculous. There is a time and place for everything so, choose wisely. The problem is men don’t think people notice what is on their feet or don’t care but, the truth is that it is the one of thing that doesn’t go unnoticed. So, step your shoe game up!

Lastly, dress appropriately. Remember that old saying “a woman loves a man in uniform”. Well that certainly can apply to everyday attire as well. Whether it is for work, a formal outing, leisure, professional or even just based on climate. It is next to impossible to look bad if you are dressed for the occasion. This isn’t rocket science. Old staples like; not weaing a t-shirt and a hoodie to a nice restaurant and not needing to get all dressed up to grab milk on a Sunday. Pick your battles! I know that I’ve given you a lot to absorb but, I do it out of love.

Good luck out there!

Shopping at Sherway Gardens Toronto

October 19, 2008 by Logan Steele · Leave a Comment

Let me start by saying that; I am not a mall guy. They are often over-crowded, highly intense and predictable. If you don’t agree, give it about a couple weeks when the Holiday season gets going and see how you feel then. The looks on people’s faces, the poor men being dragged in and out of every major retailer, just waiting for the opportunity to sit down to present itself. The look of sheer warrior instinct as the women position themselves to get that coveted item, by any mean necessary. It haunts me in my sleep. Thank God, It only comes once a year. I’m getting a little off track. My point is that it does not have to be that way and that not all malls are that bad. Take for example Sherway Gardens.

It is as if someone took a small piece of Bloor and Yorkville sprinkled in a touch of Yonge and Eglington and shipped it to the outskirts of the city core. This mall has all your reliable staples; Holt Renfrew, Sporting Life, Harry Rosen etc. It is for those of you who don’t necessarily want to travel downtown, just to get something from Lacoste. Ladies you know what I’m talking about. My only complaint is that the store layout is built like the hedge maze from “The Shining”. I get lost in there, every time! But, it is clean, there is ample seating for our less enthusiastic male shoppers who can take refuge in a leather club chair and it (for the most part) is riff-raff free. This is my type of mall. Oh, and P.S. men, you have to check out a store by the name of Long Island in there, my gift to you. Enjoy your experience!
